Staycation: Italian Style

Updated: Jun 21, 2020

Travel might look different this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get out and enjoy yourself still. With a little bit of creativity and a refreshed outlook, leisure-seekers are turning to their own cities, towns, and even backyards for fun summer activities.

The trick to a “staycation” is thinking about the elements of travel that you love most, and then localizing those things to your own surroundings. If you miss exploring, scout out some new walking or hiking trails in your local area. If you're craving some relaxation, turn your home into a mini spa for a day.

And if you love discovering new cuisines and cultures, the answer might be closer than you think!

Nestled in the heart of the Pocono Mountains, Sorrenti Family Estate Winery Distillery and Pizzeria is here to transport you to the motherland any day of the week. No passport or plane ticket required! The legacy of Sorrenti Family Estate starts in the coastal villages of Calabria, southwest Italy, where family recipes were developed and passed down.

The family’s Italian heritage can be found in every corner of the Estate’s grounds, from vats of grapes being fermented in the Southern Italian tradition, to the equally intoxicating scent of dough and cheese wafting out of Mama Lucia’s Pizzeria. The pizzeria is an homage to Dominic Sorrenti’s mother, Lucia. Born in Italy, she moved to America in 1923 and opened the family’s first pizzeria in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Mama Lucia’s culinary style revolutionized pizza by combining authentic techniques with American toppings.

Back at Sorrenti Family Estate, Mama Lucia’s grandchildren now continue in her footsteps. Sorrenti’s Mama Lucia’s Pizzeria boasts a custom Le Panyol oven constructed from terre blanc de fornage, or “White Earth” bricks, to fire your pizza at 750 degrees for a crispy crust and soft inside. Each pizza is made using tipo 00 flour specially imported from Italy.

Now won't you take a break from your daily routine and depart with us on an Italian staycation? With a glass of sangria in one hand and a slice of pizza in the other, geography is but a mindset. Ciao!
